Guide to Running Shorts

Running Short : What is it?

Running Shorts

Running shorts provide leg support and protect the skin from chafing. They also have moisture-wicking inner fabrics to absorb sweat and keep the skin dry while running. They can be loose or form-fitting, but most models end above the knee and have elastic or drawstring waistbands. They also feature inseams of different lengths, ranging from one to seven inches.

Types of Running Shorts

Kinds of Running Shorts include the following:

V-notch running shorts

V-notch shorts have small V-shaped notches cut into the sides of each leg. They are baggier and provide more coverage than split-leg shorts. They are commonly used for racing and marathon running.

Split-leg running shorts

Split-leg shorts consist of a front and back flap for each leg, which overlap at the sides. They panels split along the leg while running, providing more flexibility and freedom of movement. They are usually very short, with inseams measuring one to two inches.

Choosing Running Shorts (Buying tips)

Length: Choose short running shorts for sprints and quick runs, and longer ones for slow-paced, long-distance running. Longer shorts also provide better protection against chafing. Some body types work best with certain lengths, so try on different styles and lengths before buying.

Fit: Make sure your running shorts fit comfortably over your hips, waist and thighs. Look for one made specifically for your gender – unisex shorts do not fit very well and provide inadequate support.

Material: Choose running shorts made of soft, lightweight fabrics. Avoid cotton or nylon shorts because they do not hold moisture well. Look for waterproof fabrics if you run in wet weather, and shorts with reflective colors if you run at night. UV-protected fabrics are ideal for running in the summer or midday. Make sure they are lined with soft inner fabrics, or wear breathable briefs underneath to prevent irritation.
