Horse Boot : What is it?

Horse Boots

Horse boots are protective covers that protect a horse's legs from injuries while traveling or racing. They are usually wrapped around the lower part of a horse's legs and leave the feet uncovered. Most horse boots are made of padded fabric or leather and are secured with straps and buckles.

Types of Horse Boots

Horse BootsHorse Boots

Kinds of Horse Boots include the following:

Brushing horse boots

Brushing boots prevent the horse's feet from scratching against its legs.
They are also used as general-purpose protectors against knocks and bumps.
They can be used on both the front and rear legs and are usually fastened with Velcro straps.

Coronet horse boots

Coronet boots protect the horse from getting injured or trodden by other horses in races, polo games, or traveling in groups.
They usually have leather exteriors and thick paddings.

Fetlock horse boots

Fetlock boots protect the horse's fetlocks, or ankle joints, from brushing against each other.
They are worn on the rear legs and are ideal for show jumpers.

Hock horse boots

Hock boots protect the horse's hocks, or the joints between the hip and legs, which the horse tends to lean on heavily when traveling.
They are usually fastened loosely at the bottom to maintain proper movement and tightly at the top to keep the boot in place,

Knee horse boots

Knee boots are used to protect against injuries from falls and similar accidents.
They are also used on injured horses to hold bandages in place.

Over-reach horse boots

Over -reach boots are worn on the front legs to prevent a horse from over-reaching, or stretching too far forward and straining the muscles.
They are usually bell-shaped to fit around the pastern, or the bend between the hoof and the fetlock.
They are usually made of rubber and are used for jumping and sports.

Polo horse boots

Polo boots protect against hits from polo balls or sticks.
They are usually larger than other boot types, which may slow the horse down when traveling.

Sausage horse boots

Sausage boots protect against knocks on the lower part of the legs, particularly around the coronet.
They are worn around the rear pastern and are usually fastened loosely to allow it to move around the leg.

Speedicut horse boots

Speedicut boots protect the upper legs from brushing and scraping against each other.
They work similarly to brushing boots, but are placed higher up on the leg.

Tendon horse boots

Tendon boots prevent the horse's hind feet from hitting the front legs.
They are usually open at the front and are commonly used for show jumping.

Travel horse boots

Travel boots are designed for all-around protection during long trips.
They are usually worn on the front and rear legs and strap on from the front to the back.

Choosing Horse Boots (Buying tips)

Fit: Choose horse boots that fit properly over your horse's legs. Make sure the straps are adjustable, so that you can loosen or tighten the boot as needed. Look for a boot that matches the shape of the leg part you need to cover.

Comfort: Make sure your horse boots feel light and comfortable on your horse's legs. Padded boots are fairly comfortable, but avoid those that are too thickly padded because they can weigh down the horse's legs and slow him down.
