Guide to Horse Bits

Horse Bit : What is it?

Horse Bits

Horse bits are accessories placed inside a horse's mouth to control its movement. They rest on the delicate part of a horse's mouth called the bar, and they are connected to two reins on both sides of the mouth. They are usually made of rubber, plastic, vulcanite, stainless steel, wrought, and copper alloy, and they are soft enough not to injure the mouth.

Horse bits come in five main types: snaffle, curb, gag, pelham, hackamore, and kimberwicke. They all differ in materials and on how they help the rider control the horse.

Types of Horse Bits

Kinds of Horse Bits include the following:

Snaffle horse bits

Horse snaffle bits are non-leverage bits. They have two bars connected in the middle.
They are made of softer bit material like rubber, making them one of the gentlest horse bits available. They can be made hollow or solid with loose rings and broad mouths. The bars are linked to D loops or rings at either end, which are attached to the reins. Horse snaffle bits are used for recreational horse riding.

Curb horse bits

Curb horse reins are leverage bits used in traditional Western riding styles. They are usually made of wrought iron and copper alloy. They are ideal for horses that need advance training. Curb horse reins come with five-inch mouthpieces and long, seven-inch cheeks.

Gag horse bits

Gag horse bits are commonly made of stainless steel cheeks and copper wires. They have broken mouthpieces 5 inches wide. They exert leverage on a horse's poll and lips, and are ideal for horses that bear down with their heads. They correct the bad habit by exerting pressure that forces a horse to raise its head. There are many types of gag horse bits –gag snaffle, Dutch gag, and elevator gag styles with holes, shanks, and rings that exert varied amounts of pressure.

Pelham horse bits

Pelham horse bits are usually made of stainless steel. They have three parts: the curb chain, the mouthpiece, and the shank. They also have three unique rein rings: one on the mouthpiece and two on either shank. They have curved bars that eliminate the nutcracker action that sometimes pinches and hurts a horse's tongue. Their more complicated design exerts less pressure than curb horse bits, making them gentler.
Pelham horse bits are available in four to five-and-a-half-inch lengths.

Hackamore horse bits

Hackamore horse bits are made of wrought iron with wide five-inch mouthpieces for a comfortable fit. They fit over a horse's nose. They are made with leather nose bands that gives the rider full control of the horse. They also have long stainless steel cheeks for more comfort. Hackamore horse bits are ideal for young horses in training and competition horses that require full control.

Kimberwicke horse bits

Kimberwicke horse bits are the sophisticated versions of gag bits. They have two D rings and a mouthpiece. They are usually made of stainless steel. They have curb chains that give a mild curb bit and gentler pressure. They are shank-free and can be used with single reins. Kimberwicke horse bits can be used for all types of horses. They provide a relaxed fit.

Choosing Horse Bits (Buying tips)

Materials used: Choose horse bits made of stainless steel copper alloy because they are easy to clean and easily accepted by horses. They also do not rust easily.

Fit: Choose horse bits that fit well. They should not exert too much pressure on your horse's lips, tongue, and bars.
