A dog muzzle is a restraint placed over a dog's snout to keep it from barking or biting. It is made with a set of straps made of leather, wire, or hard plastic, and a strong buckle or a fastening mechanism to keep it in place. It is a solid device with air holes all over it, allowing the dog to breathe. It is commonly used for aggressive and untrained dogs, but it is also generally used for dogs especially in cities and states requiring dogs in public places to be muzzled.
Types of Dog Muzzles
Kinds of Dog Muzzles include the following:
Occlusion-type dog muzzle
An occlusion-type of dog muzzle is used for keeping a dog's mouth shut.
It is used for short-term purposes such as trimming nails and brushing out the burrs from its fur.
It is not meant for long-term wear because it prevents the dog from panting, which can lead to a heat stroke.
Basket-type dog muzzle
A basket-type dog muzzle covers the dog's entire mouth but still allows it to open so it could pant.
It is usually made of plastic, soft nylon, and wire.
Choosing Dog Muzzles (Buying tips)
Measurement: Look for a muzzle that fits your dog comfortably. Measure your dog's snout from the eyes to the tip of its nose to determine the muzzle's size. The circumference of the muzzle should be measured from an inch below the eyes. A one-fourth- to one-half-inch adjustment is added for a small dog while a one-half to one-inch adjustment is added for a larger dog.
