Diamond : What is it?

Diamonds

Diamonds are allotropes of carbon considered to be the hardest natural materials in the world. Aside from being made into jewelry, they are also used as abrasives for cutting other hard minerals and materials. They are commonly mined all over Africa, India, Russia, Brazil, Canada, Australia, and the United States.

Diamonds are rated according to their hardness, toughness, thermodynamic stability, and color. Commercially marketed diamonds are used in rings, earrings, pendants, and necklaces, and they are priced according to Cut, Clarity, Color, and Carat. They are cut in popular styles like pear, oval, heart, marquise, emerald, and round brilliant.

Kinds of Diamonds include the following:

Pink diamonds

Pink diamonds are the most valuable and hard to find diamonds in the world. Ninety-five percent of the world’s pink diamond supply is found in the Australian Argyle mine. Lighter pink diamonds can be found in Africa, India, and Brazil. They come in a variety of shades from light pastel pink to dark raspberry and purple-reds. Pink diamonds are priced according to color intensity. Those in a deeper shade of pink are more expensive. They are popularly used in wedding engagement rings.

White diamonds

White diamonds are the traditional diamonds most frequently used in jewelry. They are found in many mines worldwide in different sizes and shapes. Extra brilliant white diamonds with tinges of pink that resemble pink champagne diamonds can be found in the Australian Argyle mine.

Champagne diamonds

Champagne diamonds are also known as colorless diamonds. They come in a variety of light and dark shades that determine their price per carat. They are commonly found in Russian mines. Champagne diamonds are represented on a color scale: C1 and C2 symbolizing light champagne diamonds, C3 and C4 medium champagne diamonds, C5 and C6 dark champagne diamonds, and C7 fancy cognac diamonds. They are commonly used in rings and earrings.

Pink champagne diamonds

Pink champagne diamonds are champagne diamonds with a secondary pink tinge. Their pink shades vary from very light streaks to bold pink flashes. Their price per carat depends on the intensity of their pink color. Pink champagne diamonds are found in the Australian Argyle mine. They are used in most jewelry pieces like earrings, rings, and pendants.

Yellow diamonds

Yellow diamonds are rare diamonds that come in light lemon to deep canary yellow shades. They are found in the Australian Argyle mine and select mines in the United States, Botswana, and South Africa. They are used in most jewelry pieces like earrings, rings, and pendants.

Choosing Diamonds (Buying tips)

Color: The colorless (or near colorless) diamond is the most valuable type. If you are on a budget, you can get one in a faint yellow color.

Certificate: When buying real loose diamonds or diamond jewelry, make sure they come with a certificate of authentication. When buying synthetically-treated faux diamonds, look for a certificate detailing proper care and maintenance so you can maintain its color and luster.
