Guide to Cuff Links

Cuff Link : What is it?

cufflink1

Cuff links are mostly designed for double cuffs or French cuffs, which are folded back at the edges and sealed. They consist of two small discs, also called faces, which are connected by a hollow bar called a post. One face is sized to fit through the cuff's buttonhole, while the other seals the cuff from the other end. One of the faces is visible on the cuff, and is usually decorated with a monogram or jewels.

Kinds of Cuff Links include the following:

Double-faced Cuff Links

These cuff links have two similar-sized faces connected with a metal bar. They are considered the most formal type of cuff link.

Chain Cuff Links

Chain Cuff Links are similar to Double-faced Cuff Links, except that the who faces are linked by a chain. A small metal plate may be hung from the chain, often bearing a logo or the wearer's initials.

Snap-on Cuff Links

Snap-on Cuff Links have two separate faces that are snapped together through the cuff. They tend to slide and may damage the buttonhole if not securely placed.

Push-through Cuff Links

Push-through Cuff Links have one rounded end which is pushed through the buttonhole. They are easier to put on, but may fall or slide off easily.

Hinged Back Cuff Links

These cuff links include a swiveling bar attached to the hidden part of the cuff link. The bar is aligned with the post as it is pushed through the buttonhole, and locked at an angle to seal the cuff.

Choosing Cuff Links (Buying Tips)

Size: Choose a cuff link that is small enough to fit through the buttonhole, but large enough to keep it from falling through. Look for one with a wider visible face, so that the hidden part can easily push through while the other side stays in place.

Lock: Chose a cuff link with a tight clasp to prevent it from unlocking and slipping off. If you have a thick cuff, avoid Snap-on Cuff Links because they can easily unlock when you move. Hinged cuff links are usually the most secure.
