Guide to Black Diamonds

Black Diamond : What is it?

Black Diamonds

Black diamonds were once believed to be worthless because of their color, but they are now considered extremely rare and valuable diamonds. They get their unique color from mineral iron oxide inclusions. Real black diamonds are usually found in Brazil and Australia, but others are said to come from meteor impacts. Available in real and faux types, they are used in jewelry pieces like rings, earrings, and pendants for both men and women.

Kinds of Black Diamonds include the following:

Real black diamonds

Real black diamonds are naturally found in Australia, Africa, Brazil, and Venezuela. They have a characteristic black or smoky gray color resulting from highly concentrated mineral iron oxide inclusions like hematite, magnetite, and sulfide compounds. Their color saturation varies from opaque to semi-transparent and translucent varieties.

Faux black diamonds

Faux black diamonds are synthetically produced to meet the increasing demand for black diamonds. They can be produced by using irradiation, annealing, and chemical vapor deposition methods. Irradiation bombards less valuable diamonds with gamma rays or x-rays to create their characteristic smoky black color. Annealing exposes diamonds to high temperatures until graphite deposits form to create a black or gray shade. Chemical vapor deposition entails injecting carbon dioxide to plasma to create a black shade.

Choosing Black Diamonds (Buying tips)

Certificate: Choose a black diamond that comes with a certificate that tells you whether it is real or faux. The certificate also has information on the proper maintenance and care needed to maintain the rich black or gray color of your black diamond especially if it has been synthetically treated.

Use with jewelry: If you want to have a black diamond engagement ring, combine it with a light-colored metal like silver, titanium, white gold, or platinum. A black diamond engagement ring is unique, making it ideal for contemporary couples.

Social beliefs: Before deciding on getting a black diamond for your engagement ring, consider the common superstitions associated to it. Black usually represents mourning and sadness, so if these symbols are not acceptable to you, then do not get a black diamond engagement ring.
