Universal serial bus (USB) adapters connect USB devices to computers or other devices with a different interface. They have any combination of connector types on either end, as well as both male and female plugs. Some also have identical connectors for connecting devices with similar connector genders.
Types of USB Adapters
Kinds of USB Adapters include the following:
Gender changers
Gender changers have a male and female connector of the same type on either end.
They convert the USB connector on the device into the opposite gender to connect to specific devices.
Male to male/Female to female adapters
These adapters have matching connector types and genders on either end.
They are used to bridge two devices that have the same USB configuration but identical genders.
USB-to-computer adapters
USB-to-computer adapters have a rectangular USB port connector on one end and any other USB connector on the other.
They are used to connect the device to the computer's USB port.
Choosing USB Adapters (Buying tips)
Cables: Choose a USB adapter that comes with cables to extend reach and provide mobility for peripheral devices. Make sure the cables do not exceed the maximum five feet allowed for USB cables. Driver support: Choose a USB adapter with plug-and-play installation for easy transfer between computers. If it comes with a driver, make sure the driver is compatible with your operating system.
