Thumb Drive : What is it?
A thumb drive, also known as a USB flash drive, is a portable storage device with a USB interface. It is small (close to the size of a thumb, hence its name), and both removable and rewritable. It is commonly used for transferring and storing personal files such as documents, pictures, music, video, and computer applications. It is also popular among systems and network administrators who use it for loading software and configuration information for systems maintenance and troubleshooting. A thumb drive holds memory without a power supply. It is also “hot swappable,” which means the system does not need to be rebooted to read the thumb drive. It can have a storage capacity of up to 8GB. |

Kinds of Thumb Drives include the following:
Regular thumb drive A regular thumb drive is a flat stick approximately 100 millimeters long. It has a USB plug on one end. It usually comes with a cap that covers the USB plug. It contains a USB mass storage controller, NAND flash memory chip, and a crystal oscillator. Novelty thumb drive A novelty thumb drive has all the basic components of a thumb drive, but it has an elaborate housing. It can be bulky, hard to connect, and block an adjacent port. Integrated thumb drive An integrated thumb drive combines its features to another useful device such as a pen or a watch. Some models are combined with portable music players. |

Transport aid: Choose a thumb drive with a hole in the cap or the body that allows it to be connected to a keychain or lanyard for easy access. Storage capacity: Choose a thumb drive with a large storage capacity if you frequently store large files such as videos, databases, and photos. |
