Product Recall: Tomato Planters

The seemingly innocuous tomato planters have been recently found to cause injuries and property damages mainly due to weak structures. Such incidences has led to product recalls of tomato planters, notably by TV and online shopping giant QVC. Some 82,000 Topsy Turvy Tomato Planters, which QVC acquired from importer All Star Marketing, are being voluntarily recalled by the firm after being found to be ‘collapse hazards.’ These upside town planters were found to have weak legs, which have the tendency to detach and fall when the planter is moved or becomes unbalanced.

Already, QVC has received 374 reports of collapsing tomato planters. In 155 of these cases, injuries such as lacerations, broken toes and nails, and bruises were reported. These numbers continue to grow and property damages are also being constantly reported.

Full refunds are offered to people who have purchased the recalled products, which have item numbers M16702 and M17499 and sold through the QVC television program, website, stores, and employees in March and April 2008. These products can be easily spotted as consisting of a 16” x 15” bag attached to a 6-foot tale pole and a 36-inch wide base made up of three legs. Those who bought the Topsy Turvy tomato planters through the television program or the website are informed by mail regarding the refund process, while consumers who acquired the planters through other means are advised to call (800) 367-9444 between 7 a.m. and 1 a.m. ET any day for instructions on how to get a full refund. Meanwhile, all consumers are advised to take down and disassemble their planters by having two adults tip it over to one side all the way down to the floor.

This recall of tomato planters is a first for QVC and should not serve as a discouragement to people who want to start their own backyard herbal or vegetable garden. There are still many benefits to the a planter and all that needs to be done is to make sure you are buying a sturdy one. Aside from these planters, you may also want to purchase other gardening essentials like gardening software , tools, and of course, seeds. Just make sure of the quality so you won't be bothered by product recalls.
