Product Recall: Phone Battery

Recent years have seen quite a big number of battery pack recalls by phone and laptop manufacturers alike. But probably the most publicized of these is Nokia's recent recall of 46 million BL-5C phone batteries due to several reports of overheating. And just recently, a conference phone manufacturer has announced a recall of some 5,800 phone units and replacement battery packs also due to overheating. Polycom Inc. is voluntarily recalling several units of the Soundstation 2W Wireless Conference Phones equipped with lithium ion batteries, which are supplied to Polycom by Hong Kong distributor Gold Peak Industries.

The phones and replacement battery packs with the defective lithium ion batteries were reportedly sold from December 1, 2007 to May 2, 2008. Throughout this period, Polycom received one report about a battery pack that overheated and caused property damage. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported yet.

Units of the Soundstation 2W Wireless conference phones included in the recall were sold by the company through business-to-business resellers. These were further sold and distributed through print and online catalogs, as well as office supply shops and the company's website

Polycom explains an easy way of telling if your Soundstation wireless phone is included in the product recall. The company asks customers to inspect the phone part number to be found printed on the underside of the main telephone unit. Numbers to watch out for are 2201-67800-022 and -101. As for the recalled battery packs, check the battery part number to be found on the top right hand corner of the white label of battery pack and the date code on the lower left corner of the white label. Part numbers of products included in the recall are 1520-07803-003 with date codes GP1207, GP0108, GP0208, GP0308  and 1520-07804-003 with date codes GP1207, GP0108, GP0208, GP0308.

If your unit carries any one of these numbers, Polycom and CPSC recommends that you immediately remove the battery pack from the main phone unit and call Polycom at (800) 963-7627 for a free replacement pack. Do not worry that you can't use your phone while waiting for the replacement battery pack since the unit will function as long as it is connected to a charger.
