Metal necklaces are quite popular among children these days as they could go with most any type of clothing. Necklaces are must-have fashion accessories but just recently, Claire's, a popular retail store in the United States has announced a voluntary recall of a particular design of children's metal necklaces as they have been found to contain high levels of lead. Lead is considered a poisonous metal that can cause various blood and brain disorders particularly in children. Poisoning can lead to irreversible neurological damage including reduced cognition, as well as various cardiovascular problems and reproductive toxicity. The products in question are the Best Friends Yin Yang Necklaces Sets. Each set is composed of two necklaces with silver-colored metal chains and lobster claw clasps. One necklace contains a black Yin pendant with the word, “Best” attached to it while the other one has a white Yang pendant with the word “Friends” on it. The necklaces were manufactured in China. The necklaces are sold in all Claire's stores all of the United States and were available from April 2007 to August 2008. Each set costs about $8. The retail store chain's clientele is mainly composed of teenagers and preteens. Consumers are advised to remove the products from children and return them to any outlet so they can get a full refund for their purchases. For inquiries on the recall, consumers may call Claire's at (866) 859-9281, Monday through Friday, between 9 am and 5 pm (EST). You can also visit the company's website.
